Nilisä is located 55 kilometers north of the city center of Kuopio on the shores of Lake Syväri . In addition to the core city, the administrative urban area of Nilsiä included a larger rural area in the surrounding area with a total area of 847.7 square kilometers (136.1 square kilometers of which were inland water). The last population of Nilsiäs was 6,491 (as of December 31, 2012). Almost half of them, 3,174 people (as of December 31, 2011), live in the core city of Nilsiä, the only settlement center ( taajama ) .

Nilsiä was dissolved as an independent parish from Kuopio in 1816 . The municipality of Nilsiä came into being in 1869 when the municipality in Finland was separated from the parishes. Originally the community covered a much larger area, but in 1899 Muuruvesi (including Juankoski ) and Varpaisjärvi separated from Nilsiä as independent communities. In 1925 Nilsiä ceded part of its municipality to the newly founded municipality of Siilinjärvi . In 1998 the municipality of Nilsiä became a city. At the beginning of 2013, Nilsiä was incorporated into the city of Kuopio.

View from Tahkovuori mountain to Lake Syväri

Tahkovuori mountain with the Tahko ski center is located twelve kilometers north of the core town of Nilsiä . Tahko is the fourth largest skiing center in Finland and the largest outside of Northern Finland. On the slopes of Tahkovuori there are 15 ski lifts and 23 slopes with lengths of up to 1200 meters and a difference in altitude of 200 meters. At times there were ambitious plans to raise the Tahkovuori with overburden from the mine in neighboring Siilinjärvi by 300 meters and at the same time to dig a 140-meter-deep pit at the foot of the mountain. This should give the mountain the dimensions to host the Olympic Winter Games .

The revival preacher Paavo Ruotsalainen (1777-1852) lived on the island of Aholansaari in Nilsiä. His house can be visited there today. The national romantic stone church of Nilsiä was built in 1905 according to plans by Josef Stenbäck .

The description of the coat of arms of Nilsiä reads: In the black shield hovers a golden pine cross .
