Varpaisjärvi [ vɑrpɑi̯sjærvi ] is a former municipality in the Finnish countryside Savo . It has been part of the Lapinlahti municipality since 2011 .

Varpaisjärvi is located 21 kilometers east of the capital Lapinlahti, 46 kilometers southwest of Iisalmi and 59 kilometers north of Kuopio in the eastern Finnish region of Northern Savo. Neighboring municipalities of Varpaisjärvi were Sonkajärvi in the north, Rautavaara in the east, Nilsiä in the southeast, Siilinjärvi in the south and Lapinlahti in the west. The municipality had an area of ​​533.2 square kilometers (of which 50.2 square kilometers inland water) and most recently 2,908 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2009). The community was monolingual in Finnish . The only settlement center ( taajama ) of Varpaisjärvi is the eponymous church village , in which 1,225 people live (as of December 31, 2011).

Varpaisjärvi has a rural character, the main occupations being agriculture and forestry. Due to the proximity of the Tahko ski center in Nilsiä, tourism also played a certain role. Spruce trees dominate the numerous forests in the former municipality .

Varpaisjärvi broke away from Nilsiä in 1899 as an independent municipality . At the beginning of 2011, Varpaisjärvi was incorporated into Lapinlahti . The main attraction of Varpaisjärvi is the national romantic stone church from 1904 planned by Josef Stenbäck .
