Sonkajärvi [ ˈsɔŋkɑjærvi ] is a municipality in the Finnish region of Savo with 3967 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the north of the country Savo on the border with Kainuu .

Sonkajärvi Municipality has two settlement centers: Sonkajärvi parish, also known as Rutakko, and Sukeva parish. Sukeva is on State Road 5 , which cuts through Finland in a north-south direction, 25 kilometers from the community center. The municipality also includes the villages of Aittokoski, Harva-Petäys, Järvenpää-Kukkopuro, Jyrkkä, Koirakoski, Mansikkavirta, Oinasjärvi, Paisua, Pohjoismäki, Savonvirta, Sonkakoski, Toivakko, Vännimäki and Kainuunmäki. Sonkajärvi's largest employers are the municipal administration, Sukeva prison and the prefabricated house manufacturer Finndomo.
Sonkajärvi is particularly well-known for the annual world championships in wearing wives ( Finnish eukonkanto ). The participants have to carry a woman over an obstacle course. The winning team is then rewarded with the weight of the woman in beer.

Municipal council
As in most rural areas in Finland, the rural-liberal Center Party is the strongest party in Sonkajärvi . In the local council, she narrowly missed the absolute majority of the seats in the 2017 local elections with around 43% of the votes and 10 out of 21 MPs. The Social Democrats have five, the right-wing populist True Finns with four seats on the municipal council. The Left Alliance and the conservative National Collection Party are still represented in the municipal council, each with one representative.
