Päivi Maria Räsänen (born December 19, 1959 in Sonkajärvi ) is a Finnish politician of the Christian Democrats (KD) and was the interior minister of her country from June 22, 2011 to May 29, 2015.

Education and family

Päivi Räsänen completed a degree in medicine and passed the state examination in 1984. She then worked as an internist and occupational physician. Räsänen is married to Pastor Niilo Räsänen and has five children. She lives in Riihimäki .

politics

She began her political career in 1995 when she was elected member of the Reichstag , elected in the Häme constituency . From 1995 to March 2003 she was deputy group chairwoman and then until October 2004 group chairwoman. On October 6, 2004 she was elected as the successor to Bjarne Kallis as KD party leader.

In 2010 she said on Finnish television that "according to the Bible, gay marriage is incompatible with the Christian faith" and that "same-sex couples are fundamentally bad parents". In response, 34,000 members resigned from the Evangelical Lutheran Church within a short period of time.

After the 2011 Reichstag election , Räsänen became Minister of the Interior in the Katainen cabinet . In addition, she was given responsibility for church issues in the Ministry of Education and Culture. After the parliamentary elections on April 19, 2015 , her party left the government; she was replaced as Interior Minister by Petteri Orpo (National Collection Party) on May 29, 2015 .
