Bjarne Kallis

Johan Bjarne Kallis (born March 21, 1945 in Kokkola ) is a former Finnish politician and was chairman of the Christian Democratic Party (KD) from 1995 to 2004 .

Studies and professional career

Kallis completed a degree in social sciences , which he completed in 1968 with a Master of Social Sciences . He then worked for a short time as a teacher and was a lecturer at the Karleby Commercial Academy from 1969 to 2003 .

Political career

Kallis began his political career on March 22, 1991 when he was elected a member of the Reichstag . Since then he has represented the interests of the Finnish Christian Democrats (KD) in the Vaasa electoral district . During his membership in parliament he was a member of various committees. From 2007 to 2011 he was a member of the Finance Committee and an alternate member of the Finnish delegation to the Nordic Council .

In 1991 he became chairman of the KD parliamentary group in the Reichstag. He was then party chairman from 1995 to 2004. On March 22, 2007 he was again chairman of the parliamentary group after the previous chairman of the parliamentary group Sari Essayah had not been re-elected to the Reichstag.

In the presidential election on January 15, 2006, Kallis ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Tarja Halonen for the office of President of the Republic of Finland . In the first ballot, he achieved a share of 2.0% of the votes, which meant sixth place out of eight candidates. In 2011, Kallis decided not to run for parliament again and went into retirement.
