Sari Miriam Essayah (born February 21, 1967 in Haukivuori ) is a former Finnish athlete and was a member of the European Parliament for the Christian Democratic Party .

Sports

Sari Essayah, child of a Moroccan father and a Finnish mother, began her international career as Geherin in 1987 with a 19th place in the 10-km walk on the street at the world championships . She won her first medal with a 3rd place over 5000 meters on the track at the Universiade 1989 in Duisburg . In 1990 he took 5th place at the European Championships in walking 10 km on the road . In 1991 she won the Universiade and reached 3rd place at the World Championships . At the Olympic Games in 1992 , she took 4th place.

Essayah celebrated her greatest success again in Germany at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart . She won in 42:59 minutes with 9 seconds ahead of the Italian Ileana Salvador . In 1994 she won the title at the European Championships in Helsinki , where she won in 42:37 minutes with 6 seconds ahead of the Italian Annarita Sidoti . In 1995 Essayah was only 7 seconds behind gold at the World Championships , but only finished 4th in 42:20 minutes. At the end of her career, she took part in the 1996 Olympic Games and reached 16th place.

Essayah has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2016 .

After her sports career, Sari Essayah went into politics. She was elected to the Reichstag for the Christian Democrats and assumed the chairmanship of the parliamentary group. In the parliamentary election in March 2007, she missed a re-election. In the 2009 European elections , the Christian Democrats won a mandate that Sari Essayah performed. Essayah served in the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and as a member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee , the Delegation for relations with Israel and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean .

In the 2012 presidential election candidate Essayah for president. She received 2.5% of the vote, with which she was unable to tap the potential of the Christian Democrats.
