Irina Wassiljewna Stankina

Irina Wassiljewna Stankina ( Russian Ирина Васильевна Станкина ; born March 25, 1977 in Saransk ) is a Russian athlete . At a height of 1.67 m, her competition weight is 50 kg.

Irina Stankina was the world's best junior walker of the 1990s. After a third place in 1993 at the Junior European Championships over 5000 meters, she became Junior World Champion in 1994 and 1996 and Junior European Champion in 1995.

At the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg , Irina Stankina won the 10 km walk in 42:13 minutes, three seconds ahead of the Italian Elisabetta Perrone . At 18 years and 135 days, Stankina became the youngest ever world champion in the adult class.

Although Irina Stankina always had good times after that, she was no longer able to build on her great successes as a junior. She was disqualified at the 1996 Olympic Games and the 1997 World Championships . In 1999 the route for women was extended. In the 20 km walk she was only seventeenth at the 1999 World Championships in 1:35:42 h. She gave up at the 2000 Olympics .

Irina Stankina has a brother Wladimir (born January 2, 1974) and a twin sister Inna, both of whom were also active in walking. Her daughter is called Ekaterina.
