The list of world champions in athletics provides an overview of all medal winners at the World Athletics Championships of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that have been held since 1983 .

Forerunners were two events in the Olympic years 1976 and 1980, in which world champions in non-Olympic athletics disciplines were determined. In 1976 in Malmö the world champion in the men's 50 km walk was determined, in 1980 in Sittard, however, world champions were determined in two women's competitions ( 3000 meter run and 400 meter hurdles ).

Due to the large amount of data, it is divided into four sublists.

• All male medalists since 1976 are listed under All Medal Winners.
• All female medalists since 1980 are listed under All medalists , divided into current and no longer held competitions.
• The list of the most successful participants includes all athletes who have won at least two gold medals.
• The list of national rankings contains the medal table, broken down according to the total number of medals won and according to gender.
