Complete medal table |
The 3rd World Athletics Championships took place from August 23 to September 1, 1991 in the Japanese capital Tokyo . With the exception of walking and the two marathons, the competitions were held in the Olympic Stadium.
Competitions
There were no changes in the competition offer compared to the program at the 1987 World Championships .
There were still deficits in the catalog of offers for women compared to the men's competitions.

- The 3,000-meter obstacle course , which was only included in the women's World Cup program in 2005, was still missing .
- Walking area:
- Instead of walking 20 km , the competition was held over a distance of ten kilometers. In 1999 the length of the route was increased to the 20 kilometers that have long been the norm for men.
- The 50 km walk , which was included in the women's World Cup program in 2017, was missing .
- In the jump area, two disciplines were still missing in the women's program:
- Pole vault - from 1999 in the women's world championship program
- Triple jump - from 1995 in the women's World Cup program

The two best jumpers of the day improved in previously unknown performance areas. The competition actually took on historical dimensions. Since 1968 , Bob Beamon's world record of 8.90 m had remained completely untouched. The world's best long jumper for many years, Carl Lewis, who had already run a world record over 100 meters at these world championships, now achieved the seemingly impossible here in Tokyo and exceeded Beamon's distance - albeit with too much wind support. But despite this feat, Lewis did not win this competition. With Mike Powell, a competitor jumped even further, set a new world record with 8.95 m and became world champion. However, that did not change the fact that Lewis, who was twice long jump Olympic champion in 1984 and 1988 , also won the long jump gold medal at the two upcoming Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996 and was thus four-time long jump Olympic champion.

His compatriot Lars Arvid Nilsen, who was now officially second and stayed, had also been disqualified once for doping abuse and received a lifelong ban in 1992 after another doping violation.
