Päivi Alafrantti

Päivi Jaana Maarit Alafrantti (born May 8, 1964 in Tervola ) is a former Finnish athlete . She was the first Finnish European female javelin champion . With a height of 1.78 m, she had a competition weight of 82 kg.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Päivi Alafrantti threw the javelin in qualifying at 62.82 meters. In the preliminary battle she reached only 58.20 meters and finished 10th. 1989 Alafrantti became Finnish champion and won bronze at the Universiade.

In 1990 at the European Championships in Split her three litters were given invalid in the qualification. The Finnish team management protested and the jury decided that Alafrantti could take part in the final. While her teammates Tiina Lillak and Heli Rantanen were eliminated in the preliminary fight, Päivi Alafrantti improved her personal best by over two meters in the final fight and won gold with 67.68 meters in front of Karen Forkel (67.56 meters) and Petra Felke (66.56 meters) from the GDR.

At the World Championships in Tokyo in 1991 Alafrantti finished with 62.26 meters in 8th place. In Barcelona at the 1992 Olympic Games , she succeeded in qualifying no valid attempt. In 1993 she became Finnish champion again.

At the Finnish Throwing Indoor Championships on March 24, 1990 in Kuopio (Finland), she achieved an indoor world best with 59.12 m.
