Natalia Smirnitskaya

Natalja Wassiljewna Smirnizkaja , born as Natalja Djatlowa , ( Russian : Наталья Васильевна Смирницкая (Дятлова); * September 8, 1927 ; † 2004 ) was a Soviet athlete . The javelin thrower became European champion in 1950.

career

Under her maiden name, she was in 1947 behind Klawdija Majutschaja second at the Soviet championships. In 1948 she was second again, this time behind Alexandra Tschudina . After their marriage, she became Soviet champion in 1949 and 1950, ahead of Galina Sybina . In 1951 she was second behind Vera Nabokowa again in the Soviet championships.

The official world record in javelin throw has been held by the Austrian Olympic champion Herma Bauma since 1948 with 48.63 meters. Klavdija Majutschaja had thrown 50.32 meters further in 1947, but this performance was not recognized as a world record by the world association IAAF because the Soviet Union only joined the IAAF afterwards. On July 25, 1949, Smirnitskaya threw the spear in Moscow at 49.59 meters. In doing so, she had broken the world record, but not the Soviet record. On August 5, 1949, she also resolved this curiosity when she threw the spear at 53.41 meters in Moscow's Dynamo Stadium . She exceeded the unofficial world record by over three meters and was the first official world record holder with a throw beyond the 50-meter line. Her world record was only exceeded in 1954 by Nadezhda Konjajewa .

The world record holder won the European Championships in Brussels in 1950 , with 47.55 meters she was almost four meters ahead of Herma Bauma, followed by Sybina and Nabokowa.
