Dana Zátopková (born Ingrová ; born September 19, 1922 in Fryštát ; † March 13, 2020 in Prague , Czech Republic ) was a Czechoslovak javelin thrower . She became Olympic champion in 1952 and was the wife of long-distance runner Emil Zátopek (1922-2000).

Life

Zátopková was born in Fryštát . She grew up in Uherské Hradiště in Moravia , where she first learned handball and later athletics at high school . At the Olympic Games in 1948 she was seventh. After the Games, on October 24, 1948, she married Emil Zátopek, the current Olympic champion in the 10,000-meter run, who was born on the same day as she. In 1952 in Helsinki both spouses won Olympic gold almost at the same time. In 1956 in Melbourne Dana finished fourth, and in 1960 in Rome she won the silver medal.

She was also twice European champion: 1954 in Bern and 1958 in Stockholm .

In total, she was Republic Champion 13 times, she has achieved the Republic record 14 times, the European record twice and in 1958 the world record . From 1953 she worked as a trainer and was active as a national and international sports official until the end of her life. Zátopková died in Prague in March 2020 at the age of 97.
