At the XV. At the 1952 Olympic Games in the Finnish capital Helsinki , 33 athletics competitions were held.

Attendees

After Germany and Japan were still excluded from participation in the 1948 Olympic Games due to the aftermath of World War II , they were allowed to participate again in Helsinki. In addition, the Soviet Union now also sent participants who performed very successfully. Altogether there were 1342 registered athletes - 267 women and 1011 men - from 57 nations.

Stadion

The venue was the Helsinki Olympic Stadium , built from 1934 to 1936 with a view to the eventual hosting of the 1940 Olympic Games , which were then awarded to Tokyo and ultimately failed due to the war. A cinder track was laid out as a 400-meter circular track for the athletics competitions. This was in consistently good shape despite bad weather conditions with often heavy rainfall.
The stadium held around 70,000 spectators and had an electronic scoreboard for the first time. This made it much easier for the audience to follow the disciplines and the results.

Competitions

The competition offer was identical to that of the last games in London . There were 24 disciplines for men and nine for women, who still had to be content with three individual runs - 100 meters , 200 meters and 80 meter hurdles . Furthermore, there was not a single medium or long haul . In addition, only the 4 x 100 meter relay was held in the running area . There were still two jumping disciplines with high and long jump as well as three push / throwing competitions with shot put , discus and javelin throw . In this program nothing changed in the upcoming games in 1956 . It was not until 1960 that the women’s 800-meter run was included again in the Olympic program.

Sporting successes

Overall, the level of performance brought another significant increase compared to the previous major events. In the specialist magazine 'Leichtathletik' it was read that the performance is above the limits that a person can imagine. There were fourteen world records and one world best in ten disciplines. In the end , the Olympic record in 27 disciplines was better than before these games. Olympic records have been improved 189 times in total.
As in all previous athletics games, the most successful nation was the United States with fifteen gold medals. With four Olympic victories, Czechoslovakia was well behind in second place, just ahead of Australia , which was three times in front. The Soviet Union and Jamaica won two gold medals each . The USSR team introduced itself as a major athletics power when it first participated after World War II . In addition to the two gold medals, the team also won eight silver and seven bronze medals.
The outstanding athlete in these games was the long-distance runner Emil Zátopek from Czechoslovakia. He was first double Olympic champion over 5000 and 10,000 meters . On the final day he also took part in the marathon and despite his inexperience he won his third gold medal at this distance. The achievement of winning all endurance competitions in the same year at the Olympic Games is still unique in the history of athletics.
There were five other athletes who won two gold medals each at these games:
