In the first run, the Australian Shirley Strickland equalized the world record of the Dutch Olympic champion from 1948 , Fanny Blankers-Koen. In the semifinals, the times achieved were not recognizable due to a strong tailwind - here Strickland was two tenths of a second faster.
In the final, Strickland and Blankers-Koen came out of the blocks equally well, while Marija Golubnitschaja from the USSR got off to a bad start. The Dutch woman, known as the “flying housewife”, was in poor health here. The third hurdle was knocked over by her, she then stopped the race. Strickland won the race by a clear margin and became the first woman to officially break the eleven-second mark over 80 meters . Two runners finished two tenths of a second later at the same time: Golubnitschaja achieved silver with a good finish, the German Maria Sander won bronze. Her compatriot Anneliese Seonbuchner, another tenth of a second behind, came fourth.
