In the absence of world record holder Fanny Blankers-Koen, New Zealander Yvette Williams was a big favorite, especially when she became the first athlete to cross the six-meter mark at the Olympic Games in qualifying. But in the first three rounds, Alexandra Tschudina from the Soviet Union led, who also jumped 6.14 m over this mark. It was tight for Williams, she was injured in qualifying and her first two attempts in the final were invalid. With 5.90 m in the third attempt, she still reached the final of the best six. Only in the fourth round did Williams take the lead with another Olympic record . At 6.24 m, it was only an inch below the world record . Tschudina managed to jump over the six meters again in the last attempt, but she couldn't improve. The Briton Shirley Cawley won the bronze medal with 5.92 m. Just two centimeters behind, the German Irmgard Schmelzer reached fourth place.
Yvette Williams achieved the first Olympic victory for a New Zealand woman.
