final

Date: August 31, 1960, 3:45 p.m.

19 participants had qualified for the final. The favorites were the world record holder Hildrun Claus and the 1956 Olympic champion , Elżbieta Krzesińska, from Poland. The British Mary Rand also moved into the group of medal candidates after her 6.33 m in qualification.

After the first round of the finals, the Soviet athlete Wera Krepkina, better known as a sprinter and co-owner of the world record over 100 meters since 1958, led. This was followed by Claus, the German Renate Junker, Krzesińska, Krepkina's compatriot Ljudmyla Radtschenko and the third German participant Helga Hoffmann. The Dutch Joke Bijleveld and Hoffmann both had 6.11 m. Since Bijleveld had two unsuccessful attempts, while Hoffmann had 6.02 m as the next best distance, the German could continue, the Dutch woman was eliminated in seventh place. For Mary Rand, the best in the qualification, things didn't go so well in this final. Her 6.01 m was only ninth in the end.

In the second final round, Krepkina extended her lead with the new Olympic record of 6.37 m. Krzesińska now jumped 6.37 m and displaced Claus to third place. Even the improvement of the Pole to 6.27 m in the last round did not change the order. Renate Junker also improved. She jumped 6.19 m, which was not enough for a bronze medal. Junkers were two inches missing.

Wera Krepkina jumped to the first Soviet Olympic victory in the women's long jump .

Hildrun Claus won the first German medal in this discipline.
