American Ray Norton, US champion from 1959 and 1960 and winner of the Pan American Games in 1959 , and local hero Livio Berruti, who had beaten Norton once in the previous season, started as favorites.
Berruti, had already set the world record in the semi-finals and came out of the curve as the leader in the final. Norton was promising in second position. But like over 100 meters , the American showed himself out of shape in this race and fell back to sixth place. Berruti, on the other hand, set his world record from the preliminary decision and won the only gold medal in Italy in athletics in front of a home crowd. Outsider Lester Carney was second to save a medal for the US sprinters who were battered in Rome . Abdoulaye Seye won bronze in front of Marian Foik and Stone Johnson at the same time.

Livio Berruti won the first Italian Olympic victory over 200 meters .
Abdoulaye Seye won the first French medal in this discipline.
