For the finals on August 6th, two US-Americans, two British and Nigerians as well as one starter each from Brazil and Namibia had qualified.
The top favorite was world number one Michael Johnson from the USA. However, he fell ill with food poisoning after visiting a restaurant in Spain . As a result, he was so weakened that he was eliminated in the semi-finals. The favorites were the US runner Michael Marsh, who ran the Olympic record in the semifinals and missed the world record by just a hundredth of a second, as well as the Namibian Frank Fredericks, who had won silver over 100 meters and was vice world champion over 200 meters last year behind Michael Johnson. The World Cup fourth Robson da Silva from Brazil and the World Cup fifth Olapade Adeniken also started with medal prospects .
In the final, Marsh took the lead in the corner. Behind him, five runners were almost tied, just behind. Only the Nigerian Oluyemi Kayode and the Briton Marcus Adam had fallen behind a little. On the home straight, Michael Marsh showed great stamina and won with twelve hundredths of a second ahead of Frank Fredericks, who won his second silver medal in Barcelona. In the battle for bronze, the American Michael Bates prevailed just ahead of Robson da Silva and Olapade Adeniken. The Briton John Regis came in sixth place. A headwind of 1.0 meters per second prevented even better times.
In the 21st Olympic final, Michael Marsh won the 15th gold medal for the USA. It was the third consecutive US win since 1984 .
