There was only one line-up change in the final race. In the US season, Michelle Finn was replaced by Gwen Torrence .

After German reunification , the level of female sprinters in this country or the successor association was no longer as high as before. The US relay was slightly favored for this competition. But it was clear that the world champions from Jamaica and the runners from the united team would also start with good prospects.

In the final, the Jamaicans had to bury their medal hopes after the first change when Juliet Cuthbert sustained a thigh injury and was unable to continue the race. The outcome of the relay competition was completely open until the home stretch. The united team with the last runner Irina Priwalowa was less than a meter ahead of the USA with Gwen Torrence. But the American was the faster sprinter and was able to secure victory for her team with four hundredths of a second. The battle for bronze was also close and exciting after the Jamaicans failed. The Nigerian relay finally won this medal with four hundredths of a second ahead of France. Germany was fifth ahead of Australia.

In the fifteenth Olympic final of this competition, the USA won the eighth gold medal. It was the third in a row after 1984 and 1988 .

Nigeria won a medal in the women's 4 x 100 meter relay for the first time.
