In the final race there were no line-up changes apart from changes in position in the British relay.
The United States team, the reigning world champion and world record holder, was the clear favorite . In the relay, Carl Lewis was also used, who had not been able to qualify for the 100-meter individual run at the US trials due to injury . In the semi-finals over 100 meters, Mark Witherspoon sustained an injury to his Achilles tendon and could not be used in the relay. After James Jett had run in the preliminary run, Carl Lewis was used in his place in the semifinals and finals.
In the final, the US relay took the lead in front of the strong Nigerians. In the final corner, the Cuban team got off to a particularly good start and only changed slightly behind the Americans. Nigeria was a little further behind, followed by Great Britain and the United Team. The final runner of the USA Lewis was clearly the fastest sprinter on the home straight and had a lead of almost five meters at the finish. The Nigerian runner Davidson Ezinwa also ran a very strong part. He passed Cuba's representative Jorge Aguilera and was able to keep the British 100-meter Olympic champion Linford Christie in check. That brought Nigeria the silver and Cuba the bronze medal. Great Britain finished fourth, ahead of United, Japan, Austria and Ivory Coast. The US relay set a new world record for their Olympic victory.
In the eighteenth Olympic final, the USA won the fourteenth gold medal.
Nigeria won a medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay for the first time .
