First of all, the Russian Alina Iwanowa, who had become world champion for the USSR in 1991 and now started as a member of the united team, was favored. The Chinese walkers Chen Yueling, placed sixth at the world championships, and Li Chunxiu also had strong times from the Olympic season very popular. Other medal contenders were the Swedish vice world champion Madelein Svensson, the Finnish world championship third Sari Essayah, the Australian world championship fifth Kerry Saxby-Junna and European champion Annarita Sidoti from Italy.

In hot weather conditions, the world champion took the lead early on. Together with her teammate Jelena Nikolajewa, she set the pace. However, the two could not break away from their competitors. A leading group of around 20 was still close together for half of the route. Here the Chinese are now looking further ahead. Asian champions Chunxiu, Yueling and Cui Yingzi improved their positions in the field, and finally Chunxiu and Yueling took the lead. With the two Chinese women in the lead, the walkers reached the stadium. The field had become more and more stretched. The Yueling, Chunxiu, Iwanowa and Nikolajewa still had medal chances. Ivanova tried to get close and close the gap to the two leaders, but 150 meters from the finish she was warned for the third time and thus disqualified. Chen Yueling was the Olympic champion after all. In the fight for the silver medal it got tight again. Jelena Nikolajewa passed Li Chunxiu and secured second place. Ranks four to six went to Sari Essayah, Cui Yingzi and Madelein Svensson in that order.
