qualification

Date: August 5, 1992

For the qualification, the jumpers were drawn into two groups. The width for the direct entry into the final was 8.05 m. Since only eight athletes jumped this distance (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best jumpers from both groups to twelve participants (highlighted in light green). In the end, 7.90 m was enough for participation in the finals.

final

Olympic Champion Carl Lewis, USA

Date: August 6, 1992

Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, eight of them by the required qualification distance, the other four by their placements. All three US athletes took part in the final, as well as two Chinese and Cubans as well as one participant each from Australia, Greece, Romania, Slovenia and the United Team.

A duel was expected between the two US long jump stars Carl Lewis, two-time Olympic champion in 1984 and 1988 , and Mike Powell, world champion and world record holder . The third US American Joe Greene, the German European Champion and World Cup fourth Dietmar Haaf started with good prospects for top positions . Haaf, however, had already failed in qualifying.

On his first attempt, Lewis took the lead with 8.67 m. No other jumper exceeded the 8-meter mark in round one. On lap two Powell jumped into second place with 8.22 m, Cuban Iván Pedroso followed with 8.11 m. Powell improved in the third round to 8.33 m, but was displaced in the following lap by his compatriot Joe Greene in third place. Greene had jumped an inch further at 8.34 m. Powell was able to counter on the fifth attempt. With 8.53 m he returned to second place in front of Greene and Pedroso. In the last lap, the world champion reached 8.64 m. That was not enough for victory, but he won the silver medal. As in 1988 in Seoul and 1984 in Los Angeles , Carl Lewis became Olympic champion. Bronze went to Joe Greene, Iván Pedroso came fourth ahead of his compatriot Jaime Jefferson and the Greek Konstantinos Koukodimos. Only these six athletes jumped more than eight meters.

Carl Lewis won the Olympic long jump for the third time in a row . This made him the fourth athlete who managed to achieve three Olympic victories in a row in the same discipline. Before him, the US hammer thrower John Flanagan - 1900 , 1904 and 1908 , the US discus thrower Al Oerter - 1956 , 1960 and 1964 , and the Soviet triple jumper Viktor Saneyev - 1968 , 1972 and 1976 - also did this. Carl Lewis won the eighth gold medal of his career here.
His victory in the 22nd Olympic final was the 19th victory of a US long jumper. It was also the fourth triple success for the USA in this discipline.
