final

Date: July 25, 1980, 5:50 p.m.

Due to the Olympic boycott, the US jumpers were missing. Larry Myricks and the young Carl Lewis were especially valued. The GDR athlete Lutz Dombrowski remained the favorite. His greatest competitor, the Yugoslav Nenad Stekić, had to give up injured in the qualification.

Dombrowski took the lead in the first run with 8.15 m. Two centimeters behind him, the Hungarian László Szalma was first in second place. Dombrowski showed his quality in the next attempt when he reached 8.32 m. His compatriot Frank Paschek convinced in this lap with 8.22 m and took second place ahead of Szalma. In the fourth attempt, the Soviet jumper Valerij Pidluschnyj achieved 8.18 m and displaced Szalma from the bronze rank. In the next round, Lutz Dombrowski with his 8.54 m finally ensured clear conditions and won the gold medal safely ahead of Frank Paschek. The Pole Stanisław Jaskułka drew level with László Szalma with his last jump of 8.13 m. The Hungarian stayed in fourth place ahead of Jaskułka due to his second best distance. Nothing more changed for Valery Pidluschnyj either. He won the bronze medal. Dombrowski's 8.54 m was the second-best long jump in the history of athletics in 1980. Even today - as of December 2017 - Dombrowski ranks seventeenth on the world's best list with this width.

Lutz Dombrowski jumped to the first German Olympic victory in the men's long jump .
