The absence of the US hurdlers, especially the world record holder Renaldo Nehemiah and his teammate Greg Foster , led to a significant deterioration in the quality of this competition. The favorites were now the Cuban Alejandro Casañas and the GDR runner Thomas Munkelt, European champion from 1978 .

The Cuban had the best start in the final race, but touching the first two hurdles could not increase his pace fast enough. Rumors passed him. Casañas came up again, but it wasn't enough to get to the front. Thomas Munkelt won the gold medal ahead of Alejandro Casañas. Bronze went to Alexander Putschkow from the USSR.

Thomas Munkelt ran the 110 meter hurdles for the GDR's first Olympic victory . At the same time, it was the first ever German medal win in this discipline.
