Conducting the competition

The athletes competed in the eight heats on July 8th. The two best runners in each case qualified for the semi-finals on the same day. The two best runners from the three preliminary rounds also got one lap - into the final, which took place the next day.

Note: The qualified athletes are highlighted in light blue.

Prelims

Date: July 8, 1924

From today's point of view, the pre-run division is similar to the numerous competitions of earlier Olympic Games that are incomprehensible. The number of athletes per race was completely different. In the first run six athletes started, in the run-up seven it was only one who of course only had to get to the finish in order to get to the next lap. The number of runners in the subsequent heats differed between three and five. So there could be no talk of equal opportunities.

Date: July 9, 1924

The final was a head-to-head race between Daniel Kinsey and Sidney Atkinson. Atkinson touched the tenth hurdle with his foot, stumbling and losing the potential gold medal to Kinsey. Karl Anderson, who was lying in wait behind the leaders, fell at the ninth hurdle, but was still able to reach the goal. George Guthrie finished third, but was officially downgraded to sixth. He had knocked over three hurdles, which was irregular at the time. Guthrie's demotion brought Sten Pettersson to the bronze medal.

Daniel Kinsey's gold medal meant the sixth US victory in the seventh Olympic final in this discipline.

Sidney Atkinson and Sten Pettersson won the first medals for their countries in this discipline.
