Complete medal table |
The 1924 Summer Olympics (also known as the VIII Olympiad ) took place in Paris from May 4 to July 27, 1924 . The other candidate cities were Amsterdam and Barcelona , Los Angeles , Prague and Rome . The capital of France hosted the Summer Olympic Games for the second time since 1900 .
Highlights
- The games were officially opened by the French President Gaston Doumergue . The French athlete Géo André spoke the athlete's oath .
- At the closing ceremony, the ceremonial hoisting of the three flags, that of the Olympic Committee, that of the organizing nation and that of the next organizing nation, was carried out for the first time.
- For the first time the new Olympic motto “citius, altius, fortius” (faster, higher, further (actually stronger)), invented by the French Father Henri Didon, was quoted .
Outstanding athletes
- The swimmer Johnny Weissmüller from the USA won three gold medals, two of them in individual competitions and one with the team.
- The Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi , who had already won three gold medals in 1920, won a sensational five gold medals. His compatriot Ville Ritola also won four gold and two silver as a runner.
Worth mentioning
- The games were given to Paris at the express request of Pierre de Coubertin - the favorites of the other IOC members were Amsterdam and Los Angeles. To avoid a scandal, the next two Summer Games were given to Amsterdam and Los Angeles as a compromise.
- Founder of the Olympic Games and IOC President Coubertin experienced his "wishful games", wanted to forget the "shame" of 1900 and withdrew from active events after the Games as IOC Honorary President.
- 1000 accredited journalists reported on the games.
- In the years between 1912 and 1948, medals for artistic achievements in 18 areas were also awarded at seven Olympic Games. In 1924 there were the following award-winning art competitions : urban planning designs, sculpture / sculptures, painting and graphics and music (with the subdivisions into music of all kinds, singing compositions, compositions for one instrument and compositions for orchestra).
- In athletics, there were seven world records despite the heat (up to 45 degrees on some days).
- These were the last games with tennis as an Olympic sport until Seoul in 1988 .
- The film The Winner's Hour (from 1981) focuses on the participation of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell in the athletics competitions.
Competition program
126 competitions (115 for men, 10 for women and 1 mixed competition) in 17 sports / 23 disciplines were held. That was 30 competitions and 5 sports / 6 disciplines less than in Antwerp in 1920 . The changes are detailed below:

Attendees
44 nations took part in the games. It was the first time for China, Ecuador, Haiti, Ireland, Lithuania, the Philippines, Mexico and Uruguay. For Latvia and Poland it was the first summer games after they had already participated in the winter games in Chamonix in 1924. China withdrew the athletes after the opening ceremony. Nations that were losing war, such as Bulgaria , Austria , Turkey and Hungary , which were still excluded in 1920, were allowed to participate in contrast to the Weimar Republic . Since Germany had to fear that it would remain excluded in the future, the German fighting games were expanded accordingly as a replacement.
