The 1944 Winter Olympics , which would have been referred to as the Fifth Winter Olympics due to the cancellation of the 1940 Winter Olympics , were to take place in Cortina d'Ampezzo , Italy . Other candidate cities were Montreal in Canada and Oslo in Norway .

The games were canceled by the IOC in the summer of 1941 because of World War II . Cortina d'Ampezzo was later awarded the contract for the 1956 Winter Olympics by the IOC .
