The 8th Winter Paralympics were held from March 7 to 16, 2002 in the American city of Salt Lake City , the capital of the US state of Utah . The Paralympics are the Olympic Games for people with physical disabilities . About 416 athletes from 36 nations took part in the competitions in three sports and were accommodated in the Paralympic Village.
Andorra , Chile , China , Croatia , Greece and Hungary took part in the Paralympic Winter Games for the first time. The German team led the medal table with a total of 17 gold, 22 silver and 11 bronze medals ahead of the United States and Norway .
The media and visitor interest in the Paralympic Games increased further after Nagano in 1998 . Due to the high demand for tickets for certain events, the total number of tickets available has been increased from 225,000 to 248,000. The final sale was 211,790 - that's 85% of the tickets sold.
A total of 836 accredited media representatives covered the Games in Salt Lake City for print media, photography, radio and television and more than 30 broadcasters. After months of negotiations, a live broadcast of all sports worldwide was secured.
The games were overshadowed by the first doping case in the history of the Winter Paralympics: Methenolone was detected in Thomas Oelsner from Germany , whereupon he had to return his two gold medals in biathlon and cross-country skiing, was excluded from the games and banned internationally for two years.
The official mascot of the games was Otto the otter .
