Torch relay

The torch is named "Gate of Happiness." ( dt: gate of luck ) The tip of the torch should resemble a city gate, the blue color of the torch should stand for peaceful calm. The Yangtze River , which flows past Nanjing, is depicted as a stripe on the handle of the torch. According to the organizer, the torch's flame can withstand wind speeds of up to 11 m / s, precipitation of 50 mm / h, an altitude of up to 4500 m and a temperature between -15˚ C and 45˚ C.

Following Olympic tradition, the flame was lit during a ceremony on April 30, 2014 at the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens , Greece , where the first modern Olympic Games were held. Four young athletes from Greece and China then started a short relay race.

The relay race was divided into two parts. The first part was a "digital relay", where you could download an app to be able to interactively participate in the relay race under the motto "Give Me Fire." ( Eng. "Give me the fire" ) to participate. The digital flame could symbolically be passed on to friends and acquaintances by touching the corresponding devices. The relay stopped at 258 different locations at all 204 participating NOKs within 98 days.

After the digital season, the physical part began in Nanjing. Within 10 days, 104 runs carried the torch individually or in pairs. Primarily young people were selected from the fields of sport, culture, media, volunteers and the International Olympic Committee. Well-known torchbearers were the two-time Olympic badminton champion Lin Dan , the 2008 Olympic fencing champion Zhong Man and the musician and composer Bian Liunian .

mascot

The official mascot of the Games was a gem-like river stone named Nanjinglele , which was determined through a nationwide competition in 2012.

    Attendees

201 out of 204 NOK's took part in the games. Sierra Leone and Nigeria canceled their participation under pressure from Chinese authorities who feared the athletes were bringing Ebola into China. The reason was the Ebola fever epidemic, which was rampant in West Africa at the time . On August 15, 2014, Liberia also withdrew from the games because of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. An athlete from South Sudan took part as an Independent Olympian because his country did not yet have a recognized Olympic Committee.

During the games there was a doping case in the Taekwondo competition.

    Protest movement

In order to create the infrastructure for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games, major construction plans were carried out in Nanjing and the environment was severely polluted. At the beginning of March 2011, trees over 70 years old were felled to clear the way for the Summer Youth Olympic Games. This sparked a lot of excitement on the Internet and a protest movement on March 19, which was soon banned by the police.
