Complete medal table

The 5th Winter Paralympics were held from March 25 to April 1, 1992 in the French city of Albertville . The Paralympics are the Olympic Games for people with physical disabilities . The Albertville Games were the first to take place immediately after the Winter Olympics and at the same venue. 365 athletes from 24 nations took part in 79 competitions.

The competitions at these Paralympics have not yet taken place on the same facilities as the Olympic Games. A joint use of the same competition venues only began at the following games in Lillehammer . Because of the lack of suitable venues for ice sports, but also because the number of registrations was too low, only competitions in alpine and Nordic skiing were held. As a demonstration, Nordic and Alpine skiing for athletes with intellectual disabilities and biathlon for the visually impaired were presented. The opening ceremony and all other festive events took place in front of the finish area for the alpine skiing events. For the first time at the Paralympic Winter Games, all athletes were housed in a kind of Olympic village.

The official mascot of the games was Alpy .

Outstanding athletes

The German alpine skier Reinhild Möller won four gold medals. She, her teammates Gerd Schönfelder (alpine skiing) and Frank Höfle (biathlon and cross-country skiing), who each won three gold medals, as well as the rest of the German team gave Germany second place in the overall medal table with a total of 38 medals, behind the USA with 45 Medals and in front of the United Team of the Successor States of the Soviet Union with 21 medals. Austria was ranked 4th with eight wins and a total of 20 medals. The athletes from Switzerland came in 8th with three wins and a total of 15 medals.
