The 1st Paralympic Summer Games - at that time still under the name International Stoke Mandeville Games - were held from September 18 to September 25, 1960 in the Italian capital Rome . They began seven days after the end of the XVII. Summer Olympics at the same competition venues. The Paralympics are the Olympic Games for people with physical disabilities . Initially, only paraplegic athletes were admitted to the competitions . 400 athletes from 23 nations took part in the competitions in eight sports.

Ceremonies

Opening ceremony

The opening ceremony of the Paralympics 1960 took place on September 18, 1960 in front of around 5000 spectators in the Acqua Acetosa stadium. The Italian Minister of Public Health, Camillo Giardina , declared the Games open.

Closing ceremony

The closing ceremony took place on September 25, 1960 in the presence of the Games' patrons, Donna Carla Gronchi and Sir Ludwig Guttmann, in the Palazzo dello Sport in the Olympic Village . Guttmann summarized the games as follows: "The vast majority of the competitors and accompanying persons understood how to enable the re-integration of paraplegics into society and the world of sport."
