The II. Youth Olympic Winter Games were held from February 12 to 21, 2016 in Lillehammer . The opening ceremony in the small Norwegian town took place exactly 22 years after the opening of the 1994 Winter Olympics . The Winter Youth Olympic Games celebrated their debut in Innsbruck in 2012 . Lillehammer was the only applicant for the 2016 event, so the city's IOC approved it on December 7, 2011. Most of the sports were played in the facilities of the 1994 Winter Olympics, which were located in Lillehammer, Hamar , Gjøvik and Øyer . Construction work on the Olympic village began in summer 2013. Around 1,100 athletes from around 70 nations between the ages of 15 and 18 competed for medals in 2016 in Lillehammer. Ambassadors for the youth games in Lillehammer included the ski stars Kjetil Jansrud and Lindsey Vonn .

mascot

The official mascot of the 2nd Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer was the lynx "Sjogg". It was named after the main ingredient in the Winter Olympics: snow. According to the official description, the mascot is young, sporty, playful. Although lynx are rather shy, Sjogg is very sociable, enjoys spending time with friends and making new ones. The mascot of the Winter Youth Olympic Games is the result of an international competition. Sjogg was designed by the 18-year-old Line Ansethmoen from Lillehammer.

Sports facilities
