The 1st Winter Paralympics were held from February 21 to 28, 1976 in the Swedish city of Örnsköldsvik . The Paralympics are the Olympic Games for people with physical disabilities . About 250 athletes from 16 nations took part in 52 competitions in the two sports of alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. There was also a demonstration event on sled speed skating.
Participating Nations
16 nations took part in the first Winter Paralympics. Most of the athletes came from the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and the Scandinavian countries, but there was also one participant each from Uganda and Japan.
