The 1944 Summer Olympics (officially called the XIII Games ) were awarded to London by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) , but could not be held because of the Second World War .
In June 1939 the IOC held its 38th session in London. The members present had to choose one of eight candidate cities. The result in favor of the British capital was already clear after the first round:
city | country | be right |
---|---|---|
London | United Kingdom | 20th |
Rome | Italy | 11 |
Detroit | United States | 2 |
Lausanne | Switzerland | 1 |
Athens | Greece | 0 |
Budapest | Hungary | 0 |
Helsinki | Finland | 0 |
Montreal | Canada | 0 |
Despite the war-related cancellation of the Summer Games, the IOC organized several events to celebrate the 50th anniversary. These took place in June 1944 at the headquarters in Lausanne , even if only two IOC members could be present.
