    Criticism and controversy

    Crimean crisis

As a result of the Euromaidan in Ukraine and the new transitional government following the disempowerment of President Viktor Yanukovych by the Ukrainian parliament, parts of the predominantly Russian-born population on the Crimean peninsula have rebelled against the new transitional government of Ukraine, which now also consisted of members of right-wing extremist parties . On 27/28 In February 2014, the regional parliament of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea , several airports and military bases were occupied by troops not marked with national emblems . On March 1, the Duma voted for a possible deployment of Russian military in Ukraine. This development has led to an increased boycott of the Paralympics .

On March 2, 2014, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that due to the current crisis in Crimea, no official representatives of the British government would attend the 2014 Winter Paralympics. Even Prince Edward will not travel to Sochi. On March 3, 2014, the spokeswoman for the United States National Security Council announced that no US government officials would be attending. The Netherlands , Austria and Norway will also boycott the Paralympics on the part of the government. On March 5, the German government decided not to send any representatives to the Paralympics. However, depending on the development of the situation in Crimea, a subsequent posting can still take place. On March 7th, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced that the French government would boycott the Winter Paralympics.

The International Paralympic Committee stated that no athletes would yet boycott the Winter Paralympics.

The Ukrainian team takes part in the Winter Paralympics after lengthy discussions. Valery Suskevich, chairman of the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine, said the team would reserve the right to boycott if the situation in Crimea escalated. As a sign of protest, only the biathlete and cross-country skier Mikhailo Tkachenko appeared as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony . The remaining 30 delegates stayed away from the celebrations.
