Sergei Walentinowitsch Schilow ( Russian Сергей Валентинович Шилов ; born October 1, 1970 in Pskow ) is a former Russian disabled athlete who was active in athletics , cross-country skiing and biathlon .

Career

Schilow began his sports career as an orienteer. On returning from a competition in Estonia in 1986 , he was seriously injured in a car accident. He remained paraplegic after a thoracic vertebral fracture. He has been involved in disabled sports since 1990. From 1993 he secured national titles at the handicapped championships in cross-country skiing and athletics at regular intervals. At the Summer Paralympics 1992 he started in the TW4 classification in the running disciplines, but remained without a medal. Even at the 1996 Summer Paralympics , he remained without front placements. In winter he continued to specialize increasingly in biathlon and cross-country skiing. At the 1994 Winter Paralympics , he celebrated good results, but failed to win a medal.

After he won the cross-country skiing title at the European Disabled Championships in 1997, he started as one of the favorites at the 1998 Winter Paralympics in Nagano . There he secured his first Paralympic gold medal in the cross-country skiing discipline over 5 km. After he became European champion again in 2001, he won gold in singles over 15 in sitting and relay gold at the 2002 Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake City . He also secured over 10 km of silver. In biathlon he was again without a medal after 1994.

At the Winter Paralympics 2006 in Turin , Schilow won two more silver and one bronze medals. Four years later at the Winter Paralympics 2010 in Vancouver , he won the gold medal again in the 1 km sprint sitting. He was also successful with the relay.

At the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi , Shilov and Olesja Wladykina lit the Paralympic torch at the opening ceremony.
