Krasnaja Polyana ( Russian Красная Поляна ) is a mountain village (administratively an urban-type settlement ) in the Krasnodar region ( Russia ) with 4598 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
Administratively, the place belongs to the Adler district of Sochi and is located about 40 kilometers as the crow flies east-northeast of the center of the Black Sea city of Sochi at an altitude of about 600 m in the Msymta valley . It is surrounded by the mountains of the Caucasus , which here reach heights of over 3000 m (Tschugusch 3238 m , Pseaschcha 3257 m , Zachwoa 3345 m ) and are partly glaciated.
Tourism and sport
In summer Krasnaya Polyana is a popular hiking and touring area with an alpine character. The place lies between two nature reserves of over 400,000 hectares: the Caucasus nature reserve in the high elevations of the mountains and the Sochier National Park towards the Black Sea coast. Because of its similar landscape with the Swiss canton of Ticino , the existing lakes and mountains, the Sochi / Krasnaja Poljana area is also called "Russian Switzerland".
2014 Winter Olympics
Krasnaya Polyana has been expanded into an exclusive winter sports resort in recent years with investments of billions. In 2014, the snow sports competitions of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which were awarded to Sochi, were held here. Some of the alpine competitions were held in Rosa Khutor , about 8 kilometers from Krasnaya Polyana , where there are still four chairlifts, and in the associated Rosa Khutor Extreme Park . New stadiums and modern accommodations for the athletes were built in Adler . For the biathlon - and cross-country skiing competitions was Laura biathlon and cross-country skiing center built. The ski jumping center RusSki Gorki was built for ski jumping competitions . The Russian state paid sixty percent of the costs. The remainder was financed by the private sector and the state-controlled energy company Gazprom .
According to the will of the then Russian Prime Minister and current President Putin, Krasnaya Polyana is to become the “shop window of the new Russia”. H. exclusive and "world class in every respect".
At times there was resistance from the population: from circles of nature conservation, who complained, among other things, of the destruction of biotopes and around 20,000 hectares of forest, but also from around 1500 people who were expropriated and resettled.
history
In 1899 the settlement was given the status of a city under the name Romanovsk (after the family name of the Russian Tsar dynasty ). However, after the failure of the expansion plans to become a resort for the Russian upper class, it lost this status again and was renamed Krasnaya Polyana in 1923 (German: Red Glade or Beautiful Glade , depending on the interpretation).
