history
Abinsk was founded in 1836 on the site of a former Circassian settlement. Initially, the place was a Cossack stanitsa , which served the Russian Empire as one of the fortresses north of the Caucasus . At the same time, the settlement served as a place of exile, so the Decembrists Bestuschew , Odojewski and Katenin lived here .
During the Soviet era , Abinsk became the capital of the newly formed district ( Rajons ) of Abinsk in 1935 . Until 1963, when the settlement received city rights, it was called Abinski (Russian Аби́нский ).
Abinsk is also mentioned historically in connection with the deportation of the local Greeks from the Abinsk and Seversk districts in 1942.
