location

Gulkewitschi is located in the foothills of the Caucasus in the eastern part of the Krasnodar Territory, about 150 km from its capital Krasnodar . It is located near the left bank of the Kuban River . The closest city is Kropotkin, 20 km northwest of Gulkewitschi .

history

The city was founded in 1875, when the railway line from Rostov-on-Don to Vladikavkaz was opened, on which Gulkewitschi was initially laid out as a station settlement. The place name was chosen after the family name of the then local landowner Nikolai Gulkewitsch. Despite the railway connection, the settlement was still a poor and backward village until the 1920s. When several factories were built here in the course of the industrialization of the Soviet Union , Gulkewitschi was developed as a workers' settlement. In 1961 it received city status.
