Apscheronsk ( Russian Апшеро́нск ) is a city with 40,225 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Krasnodar region in southern Russia . It is located on the Pschecha river (river system of the Kuban ), about 100 km southeast of the subject capital Krasnodar . The nearest city is Chadyshenk, about 20 km west of Apsheronsk.

history

The place was founded in 1863, originally as a settlement for members of the so-called Apscheron regiment of the Imperial Russian Army . The name of the regiment, from which today's city takes its name, is derived from the name of the Abşeron peninsula (Russian spelling Апшеро́н / Apscheron ) in today's Azerbaijan , which was among other things the target of the Persia campaign of Peter the Great in 1722/23 .

In 1947 the previous Staniza Apscheronskaja ( Апшеро́нская ) received city rights and at the same time its current name. Today Apsheronsk is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

The Apsheronsk war cemetery, inaugurated on September 6, 2008, is to become the central collective cemetery for all German soldiers who fell in World War II in the Caucasus and in the area of the former Kuban bridgehead . The 3.1 hectare cemetery is about twelve kilometers from the village. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge has laid over 6,600 dead there so far. About 30,000 can be buried on the site.
