Location of Abşerons in Azerbaijan

Abşeron ( Russian Апшерон / Apscheron ) is a rayon in eastern Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea . The capital is the city of Xırdalan . The name of the district is derived from the Persian abhoran (آبشوران), which means something like place of salty water .

geography

The rayon has an area of ​​1361 km² and consists mainly of flat land . The rayon lies partly on the Abşeron peninsula of the same name and was founded in 1963. There are nine settlements and five villages in the district.

economy

Olives, grapes, figs, cereals and almonds are grown in the region. Salt is also extracted from the sea. Cattle are also raised and the agricultural products in the region are processed. There are also oil and gas deposits that are being exploited. Furthermore, the district is a recreation area for the population of the neighboring metropolitan area of Baku .

population

The population consists of 96.2% Azerbaijanis . In 2009 the rayon had 189,400 inhabitants.
