Göygöl (Rayon)
Göygöl is a Rajon in western Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Göygöl . Until 2008, the rayon was called Xanlar .
geography
The district has an area of 1183 km². There are seven lakes in the district, also called Tears of Kapaz . One of them is Lake Göygöl, after which the rayon and its capital are named. In the south the region is mountainous and forested.
history
The district was founded in 1930. In 1992 part of the area was split off as the Samux district. On April 25, 2008, the rayon with the city was renamed from Xanlar to Göygöl.
population
In 2009, 57,000 people lived in the rayon. These are spread over 45 settlements.
economy
The region is dominated by agriculture. Wine, fruit and vegetables are grown and cattle are raised.
Culture
The Ag Korpu (White Bridge), which was built in the 12th century, is located in the rayon . There are several archaeological sites from the Stone and Bronze Ages and there is a wooden Lutheran church from 1854 in the capital.
traffic
An Azerbaijani highway and a railway line of the Azərbaycan Dövlət Dəmir Yolu run through the district .
