Neftçala (Rayon)
Neftçala is a rayon in southern Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Neftçala .
geography
The district has an area of 1451 km². It lies on the coast of the Caspian Sea , completely below sea level . The climate is dry and warm, the area is a steppe. There are deposits of oil and gas.
population
In 2009, 79,400 people lived in the rayon. These are spread over 12 settlements.
economy
Crude oil is extracted and processed in the district, there are refineries and salt is extracted by the sea. There are also large bakeries, dairies and mechanical engineering companies. In addition to fishing, the cultivation of cotton, vegetables and fruits is important.
Archaeological sites
Remains of an ancient city called Nord-Ost Goltug have been discovered on the coast. Archaeologists suspect the city of Sebail there. A red brick wall encloses the former city. The district also includes the Piratavan Crypt, the Khilli Mosque and the Giltug Fortress.
