Xocavənd (Rayon)

Location of Xocavənd Rayon in Azerbaijan

Xocavənd is a rayon in southwest Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Xocavənd . Most of the rayon lies in the internationally unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic , which has divided it into the provinces of Hadrut and Martuni .

geography

The district has an area of 1458 km². The region is located in the mountainous Nagorno Karabakh, between 500 and 2725 meters above sea level.

history

The district was created in 1930 . On October 23, 1993, the district was captured by the Armenian army . According to Azerbaijani data, the rayon had 41,500 inhabitants in 2009.

economy

The region is dominated by agriculture. Above all, wine and grain are grown and cattle is raised.

Culture

One kilometer south of the village of Asych is the Asych cave , which was used by the Armenian soldiers as an arsenal .
