Location of Cəbrayıls in Azerbaijan

Cəbrayıl or Dschäbrajil (also Jabrayil ) is a rayon in southwest Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Cəbrayıl . Because of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict , the entire district , including the capital, had been occupied by the Armenian army since August 1993 . The Armenian name for the area is Jrakn . During fighting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides in April 2016, L Berglə Təpə mountain was conquered by the Azerbaijani army and the village of Çocuq Mərcanlı was the only one in the district to be accessible from the Azerbaijani side again.

geography

The rayon has an area of 1050 km². The district is located in the southeast of the Lesser Caucasus and is very mountainous. The Aras River forms the natural, southeastern border with Iran . Here the district borders on the Iranian province of Ardabil .

population

According to Azerbaijani data, the rayon had 70,300 inhabitants in 2009. Parts of the population fled the district to other parts of Azerbaijan after the Armenian army marched in.

Economy and Transport

Before the occupation, cattle and viticulture were practiced in the region, and cotton was grown and processed. The railway line from Baku to Naxçıvan , which is currently out of service, runs along the Macaw . The road and rail connections from Armenia through the district to Iran are in operation and important.

Attractions

In the district lie the medieval bridges of Choda Afarin over the river Aras. There is an old watchtower in the village of Chudayarli and a mausoleum in the village of Schichlar. Both are of archaeological interest.
