Cəbrayıl or Jäbrajil ( Armenian Ջրական Dschrakan , also Cäbrayil , Jabrayil , Jrakan ) is the capital of the Cəbrayıl district in Azerbaijan . It lies in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh , in which it is administered by the Hadrut Province .
In 1897, according to the Russian census, the place had 520 inhabitants, including 228 Armenians, 186 Azerbaijanis and 76 Russians. By 1989 the city had a population of 6,000. After the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict escalated in 1990, it was conquered by Armenian-Karabakh associations in 1993 and has been occupied since then. The Azerbaijani people fled. Azerbaijan still regards Cəbrayıl as a city, while the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic states the place as deserted.
