Laçın ( Kurdish Laçîn, also Lachin ) is a rayon in Azerbaijan . The capital of the district is the city of Laçın .

geography

The district has an area of ​​1835 km². The landscape is mountainous and belongs to the Lesser Caucasus . The largest mountain is the Gizilbogaz with 3594 m height. There are several mineral springs as well as deposits of building materials. The Lachin Corridor , the most important connection from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, is located in the district .

The region belonged to the autonomous province of Red Kurdistan from 1923 to 1929 . The district was occupied by Nagorno-Karabakh troops in the course of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1992 , as it forms a corridor between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh . The area is administered by Nagorno-Karabakh as part of the Kashatach Province .

According to Azerbaijani sources, the region had 72,000 inhabitants in 2009. At that time there were 125 villages, the larger settlement Minkend and the capital. After the occupation by the Armenian army , many Azerbaijanis and Kurds were expelled and replaced by Armenians, especially refugees from Azerbaijan.

Tobacco , grain and fruit are grown in the region and cattle are raised.

Attractions

The mausoleums of Malik Ajdar and Kargumbez are located in the district , both near the Djidjimli settlement. The 5th century monastery of Cicernavak is also located near the town of Lacin .
