The armed forces of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic ( Armenian Լեռնային Ղարաբաղի Հանրապետության պաշտպանության բանակ Lerrnayin Gharabaghi Hanrapetut'yan ink'napashtpanut'yan banak ) are the armed forces of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh . They were founded in 1992 in the course of the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region .

history

The armed forces were officially established on May 9, 1992 to protect Armenian civilians from militant groups . Previously, the militias fought in small units of no more than 40 men. In the first months of the war between Azerbaijan and units from Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, the armed forces were poorly equipped and uncoordinated. This improved in the course of the war and the troops of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, together with the Armenian army, were able to bring large parts of the area claimed by Nagorno-Karabakh under their control. They also occupied all or part of the Azerbaijani districts of Ağdam , Cəbrayıl , Füzuli , Kəlbəcər , Laçın , Qubadlı and Zəngilan , which lie outside the former Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous region. A ceasefire agreement came into force on May 12, 1994. The status quo has prevailed ever since . Around 17,000 Armenians and 25,000 Azeris fell during the war. The main task of the armed forces today is to defend the border of the unrecognized republic. Trenches have been dug along the border and there are repeated exchanges of fire with the Azerbaijani armed forces with dead and injured. The armed forces of Nagorno-Karabakh are also closely interwoven with the armed forces of Armenia, which in turn work closely with the Russian armed forces .

equipment

There are no official data on the budget and equipment of the armed forces. The data available speak of fewer than 400 tanks. The army is also said to have BM-21 and WM-80 rocket launchers and R-17 rockets. The standard rifle of the infantry is the AK-74 . It is also equipped with Makarov pistols and RPG-7 bazookas . The air forces have 2  ground attack aircraft Suchoi Su-25 , 5  combat helicopters Mil Mi-24 , 5  transport helicopter Mil Mi-8 and 4  drones type Krunk UAV . There are also several artillery pieces .
