The armed forces of Brunei ( English Royal Brunei Armed Forces , Malay Angkatan Bersenjata DiRaja Brunei ) include the armed forces army , air force and navy and support units .

In 2017, Brunei spent just under 2.9 percent of its economic output (347 million US dollars) on its armed forces.

General

Brunei has 5900 soldiers strong professional army . Due to the existing laws, only ethnic Malays are allowed to serve in the armed forces .

The tasks of the armed forces are:

  • Defense against all direct and indirect threats to the sovereignty and the territory of the Sultanate of Brunei .
  • Conducting military operations to defend against external aggressors, terrorism and insurrections
  • Assisting civil authorities (such as the police) in maintaining public order.

history

The predecessor of today's Brunei armed forces is the Brunei Malay Regiment , whose formation began in 1961 and was officially put into service in 1962 in Port Dickson (near Seremban ). It comprised the staff and three companies of infantry . In 1965 it was renamed the Royal Brunei Malaiish Regiment , stationed in Brunei, expanded to include an air force and naval section, and placed under joint command. In 1972 the Army, Air Force and Navy components were separated and the 1st Battalion of the Royal Brunei Malaiish Regiment was set up with five companies. In 1975 the B and E companies were called in to set up the 2nd battalion.

With Brunei's independence in 1984, the 3rd Battalion was set up using the D Company of the 1st Battalion and the F Company of the 2nd Battalion. The previous anti-aircraft battery and the Engineer Corps were combined in the support battalion and expanded to include a tank company .

Army ( Tentera Darat Diraja Brunei )

The army has a strength of 3,200 men and consists of three infantry battalions and one support battalion . In addition to a tank company , an anti - aircraft battery and a pioneer company , the support battalion also includes the headquarters of the army.
