The Turkmen Armed Forces ( Turkmen Türkmenistanyň Ýaragly Güýçleri ) are in the armed services army , air force and air defense and navy divided. There is also a national guard . Turkmenistan concluded a bilateral defense agreement with Russia in 1992 , around 12,000 Russian soldiers from a Mechanized Division and the Air Force were stationed to secure the border with Afghanistan and Iran . As relations deteriorated, the last Russian troops left the country in 1999.

The weapon systems of the armed forces of Turkmenistan are predominantly of Russian origin and are only operational to a limited extent.

The Turkmen Army with 18,500 members is divided into an Army High Command, which is subordinate to five military districts.

It consists of three mot rifle divisions , two mot rifle brigades , a training Division, an independent airborne battalion , an antitank regiment , a pioneer regiment , an artillery brigade , a multiple rocket launchers regiment , a R-17 - brigade and two air defense regiments .

In the event of mobilization, the training division is reinforced to form a mot rifle division with reservists.

The Turkmen Navy has 500 soldiers. It comprises one speedboat of the 1-MERJEN-WPB class (PB-129), four speedboats of the KALKAN-PBI- class and five speedboats of the GRIFT-PB class.

The Turkmen Navy, like the Kazakh Navy , is subordinate to the Russian Caspian Flotilla , whose headquarters are in Astrakhan .

There is still a Coast Guard with five KALKAN-M -Schnellbooten having their base in Türkmenbaşy have. Their task is to monitor the Caspian Sea on the Turkmen side. It is planned to merge the naval forces with the coast guard.
